Long thought of as a sport for gentry played on lawns in front of stately homes, our croquet group plays in a corner of the playing fields on Moor Lane Recreation Ground behind a container!
We play a very sociable and enjoyable form of the game called Golf Croquet. We have three lawns which limits the number of people playing at any one time to 24. For this reason, we have a maximum membership of 28 and maintain a waiting list when necessary. Please contact our convenor to find out the current position.
Most members start with no knowledge of the game but, after some tuition, the rudiments of golf croquet can be learnt quickly. Learning strategy is equally as important as acquiring the skill to hit the ball where you want it to go! It is one of the few sports in which men and women can play on equal terms regardless of physique and strength. There are mallets for use by members and the only requirement of players is to wear flat shoes on the lawns.
We play on Monday afternoons from 13:30 to 16:30 with a break for refreshments. For the first session, games are organised by drawing who plays who to ensure there is a varied mix of players. We also hold a handicap singles and a doubles competition during the season.
The season runs from the beginning of April to mid October. Croquet is played on lawns managed by the Branston Croquet Club. The lawn fee plus some incidentals which includes refreshments, results in an annual fee which I expect will be £25 for 2025.
