On Friday 11th September, a week later than normal, our outing was to Potteric Carr, just south of Doncaster, and it was another of those "turned out nice again" adventures, with a slow start that had the five of us wondering if we were going to have a disappointing session, with few birds around, a very quiet environment in terms of bird calls, and dry pools, although we did get an early sighting of a Green Woodpecker on the ground not far from the visitor centre.
As the day progressed, however, things got much more interesting, with repeat sightings of a Hobby hunting overhead, a quick fly-past of a Kingfisher, then a couple of Green Sandpipers and a distant Spotted Flycatcher perched high in a tree. We probably wouldn't have noticed or identified the flycatcher had it not been for some very pleasant gents who pointed it (and the Sandpipers) out. We later found a Garganey, again with the help of a kind gent telling us which area of reeds it had disappeared into, so that we knew where to look when it reappeared, and likewise a pair of Red-crested Pochards and a Pintail.
All in all, it was a very successful day's birding, with 37 bird species as well as Speckled Wood butterflies and Migrant Hawker dragonflies amongst other insects.
